Welcome

Hello! Although this blog is a class requirement, I will check in several times a week with thoughts on public relations, online media and journalism. I'll try to keep it centered on PR and online advocacy, but as a news junkie, I may stray into news-related subjects. (Although never related to my beat, since officially, I have no opinion about anything). Thanks for reading!

If you like, I am curious about your work. I was a newspaper reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, Wis., and then the Center Daily Times in State College, Pa. I think journalism is wonderful training for a career, but I must admit I am glad that I left. Journalists learn how to write clearly and to get to the point - both huge assets.

What is your beat in Fredericksburg? Do you enjoy the work? You probably have some insights into public relations that the rest of the cohort would find useful (if you have not already shared them during another class).

My beat is transportation, with a little bit of business and tourism mixed in. I fell into journalism in college when I started working at the student newspaper. I was a political science major, but I didn't enjoy an internship on Capitol Hill during college, and I had dreadful LSAT scores, so reporting was my most marketable skill when I graduated. A year ago, I started to feel like I've achieved about all I can as a journalist. It's hard to affect much change with a 15-inch story. I like the lively nature of the newsroom, but I'm hoping to transition to a career where I have all the mediums at my disposal to send a message. Plus, and I don't know if you felt this way as a reporter, it's a lonely job. Lots of sitting in government meetings solo. William Safire spoke at my college graduation, and he talked about his government and media careers. I felt like he was talking to me when he said "The dogs may bark, but the caravan moves on." I think I knew I would try journalism but leave the door open to do other things. I've tried to present the media's view of public relations in our classes, to the extent my classmates are probably tired of me! I'm definitely an advocate for transparency.
